If Usain Bolt took sprinting advice from you, would he run faster?
If Warren Buffet took financial advice from you, would he become wealthier?
If Kendrick Lamar took rhyming advice from you, would he sell more records?

The answer to all of those questions is most certainly 'NO'.

Why?

Because downstream advice can never take us upstream.

So then why is it that you allow yourself to take advice from those who do not have what you want

Friends.
Family.
People on the internet.

I have a strict rule in my life, and it's gotten me very far.

That rule is to never take on advice from someone unless they've achieved exactly what I also want to achieve.

If they haven't, the best they can do is to show me what NOT to do.

So next time you're listening to someone give you advice, ask yourself: Have they achieved what I want to achieve?

And if the answer is no, keep your ears closed.

Their advice is often given with love and the best intentions, and so I hear the advice not as a potential action plan, but simply as a reminder that that person cares for me and wants the best for me.

I'll receive that love with open arms...

But as for helping me achieve my goals and visions? I'll save that for those that are upstream to me.
